Eligibility

An Australian citizen normally travels on a valid Australian passport, completes the New Zealand Traveller Declaration, and meets New Zealand's character and entry requirements. An Australian citizen generally does not need an NZeTA before travel.

An Australian permanent resident normally needs an NZeTA before traveling unless already holding a valid New Zealand visa. At the border, the person must be able to show a current Australian Permanent Resident Visa or Resident Return Visa with travel conditions that permit return to Australia. Australian temporary residence does not qualify.

Both groups can be refused residence or entry permission on character or other admissibility grounds. A person with convictions, deportation history, exclusion, or security issues should not assume border processing will be routine.

What This Route Allows

Once granted, the Australian Resident Visa permits indefinite residence, work, and study in New Zealand. Australian citizens and permanent residents may later qualify for a Permanent Resident Visa after holding New Zealand residence continuously for at least 24 months and meeting the applicable requirements.

New Zealand citizenship is a separate application. An Australian citizen or permanent resident can generally count qualifying time after becoming resident and may apply after meeting the 5-year residence and presence rules, plus English, character, and intention requirements.

What This Route Is Not

The visa granted on arrival normally expires when the holder leaves New Zealand because it has no multiple-entry travel conditions. A holder who wants to travel and keep continuous New Zealand resident status should obtain a Variation of Travel Conditions before departure. Losing continuity can also delay permanent residence.

The route does not cover holders of Australian temporary visas. It also does not automatically give a partner or child New Zealand residence; each family member must qualify in their own right or through an appropriate family visa.
