Summary
Trinidad and Tobago has a registration route for Commonwealth citizens, citizens of the Republic of Ireland, and British protected persons. It is usually built around residence or government service, good character, English knowledge, knowledge of citizen duties, legal entry, and the oath of allegiance.
Who qualifies
The route is strongest where you can show:
- You are a Commonwealth citizen, a citizen of the Republic of Ireland, or a British protected person.
- You are of full age and capacity.
- You are of good character.
- You have adequate knowledge of English and the duties of a T&T citizen.
- You have five years of residence, government service, or a mix of both immediately before applying, or at least twelve months accepted by the Minister in special circumstances.
- You entered Trinidad and Tobago legally and are not in a prohibited class.
- You can take the oath of allegiance.
What to watch
The special-circumstances shortcut is not an ordinary one-year route. The Act gives the Minister discretion to accept a shorter period, but it cannot be less than twelve months.
Records to gather
Expect to gather:
- Proof of Commonwealth, Irish, or British protected-person status
- Residence and travel-history records
- Government-service records, if relevant
