New Zealand Expands Post-Study Work Options in November 2026

The November changes create two different outcomes. Some graduates enter the existing Post Study Work Visa framework; others receive a shorter, more limited bridge for finding qualifying employment.

Expanded Post Study Work Visa eligibility

From 16 November 2026, a graduate-diploma holder may qualify where the person:

The bachelor's degree has no announced recency limit. An overseas degree does not ordinarily require an International Qualification Assessment for this purpose, although Immigration New Zealand may check authenticity.

The Post Study Work Visa may be granted for the time spent studying the graduate diploma in New Zealand, up to one year. The work conditions and ability to support family members follow the Post Study Work Visa rules applicable to the qualification.

The Short-term Graduate Work Visa

The new visa provides six months of open work rights to eligible graduates of a level 5–7 qualification who are not eligible for the Post Study Work Visa. The qualification must generally have been studied full time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks and cannot be an English-language, foundation or bridging course.

The applicant must apply within three months after the student visa expires and show at least NZD $5,000, together with the required health, character and scholarship approvals.

The visa permits work for an employer under an employment agreement or contract for services, but it does not allow business ownership. It cannot be extended, and it cannot be used to support a partner for a work visa or a child for a domestic-fee student visa. Family members may need independent visas.

One post-study opportunity

A person who has already received a Post Study Work Visa cannot receive the new short-term visa. Likewise, someone who has held the short-term visa cannot later receive another short-term visa and cannot use it to obtain a Post Study Work Visa without returning to eligible further study under the published rules.

This prevents the new category from functioning as an automatic extra six months for every former student.
