Most UK Graduate Visas Fall to 18 Months in January 2027

The Graduate route remains an unsponsored bridge after eligible UK study, but its standard duration is changing. The new rule does not shorten a Graduate permission that has already been granted for two years.

Which applications receive 18 months

The Home Office states that the 18-month duration applies to applications submitted on or after 1 January 2027, except eligible doctoral graduates. A non-doctoral graduate who submits before that date remains under the duration rule applicable to the earlier application.

Course completion alone is not an application. The education provider must report successful completion as required, the applicant must still hold eligible Student or Tier 4 permission, and the online application must be validly submitted from inside the UK.

A person should not file before becoming eligible merely to try to secure two years. An invalid or premature filing can be refused and may create more serious immigration consequences than the six-month difference.

Doctoral graduates

The rule retains the three-year duration for people who successfully completed an eligible PhD or other doctoral qualification. It does not give every research master's or postgraduate course three years; the completed qualification must fit the doctoral provision.

Practical effect of the shorter grant

Graduate permission allows broad employment and job changing, subject to the route's restrictions, but it cannot be extended. A shorter standard period reduces the time available to:

The Graduate period ordinarily does not count toward a five-year Skilled Worker settlement period, although lawful residence may be relevant to a separate long-residence calculation.
