Albania Retirement Residence
At a glance
Albania offers renewable residence to people receiving a foreign pension who will not work there. The retirement visa requires pension income of at least ALL 1,200,000 a year; visa-exempt applicants still need pension evidence and must meet the residence and living-funds rules.

Summary
Albania offers residence for retirees who can document a foreign pension and enough resources for their stay. Ordinary retirement permission is renewed annually and does not authorize employment, self-employment, or professional work carried out remotely from Albania. The actual permit and any nationality-specific rules determine its term.
-
Document the foreign pension Obtain evidence of retirement, pension source, and annual amount.
-
Check the D/P visa requirement Applicants needing that visa must meet its specific pension-income test.
-
Prepare the living arrangements Document the applicable support funds, housing, health coverage, and authenticated personal records.
-
Complete visa and residence steps Use the visa process if required, then apply during legal stay and complete address and biometric required steps.
Visa exemption does not remove the residence requirements. The route is for retirement, and taking up work requires a separate status review.
Eligibility
Article 85 covers foreign nationals who are retired in their country and lawfully staying in Albania. A pension certificate is required.
For applicants who need the D/P retirement visa, Decision No. 858 requires proof of annual pension income of at least ALL 1,200,000. This figure is specifically stated in the visa checklist. The current residence-permit checklist separately requires pension evidence and the general residence conditions. Do not apply an assumed visa exemption without checking the applicant's passport and circumstances.
The general financial-evidence rule accepts an Albanian-bank personal or family deposit of at least ALL 300,000 per person for one calendar year, or monthly income at least equal to Albania's current minimum wage. The household must still have adequate support; confirm the evidence and current wage applicable when filing.
Applicants also need suitable housing, health coverage, the relevant passport and background documents, and the appropriate lawful-entry basis. The holder must refrain from economic or professional activity in Albania.
What This Route Allows
Article 85 provides a first permit of up to one year, renewable annually while the conditions continue. A holder may seek family reunification for a spouse or partner who is not retired, subject to the family rules.
EU citizens have a separate residence-registration system under Article 33/1, with its own rules for qualifying family members. Check that system before applying for an ordinary residence permit. U.S. and Kosovo citizens have a general five-year first-permit provision under Article 33(5); confirm how it applies to your category and rely on the validity actually issued.
What This Route Is Not
This is not a general passive-income or savings route. A pension must be documented. It does not authorize local employment, self-employment, or remote professional activity carried out from Albania. Residence and any later permanent residence or citizenship remain separate applications.
