Summary
Students accepted for qualifying study in Albania can normally receive an initial permit for one year or the shorter program duration, then renew it while their studies continue. After the first study year, eligible students may work outside class hours for up to 15 hours a week with the required employer notification.
-
Confirm the recognized institution and program Obtain formal admission and the school’s language and enrollment evidence.
-
Prepare tuition and financial support Add the required visa, insurance, and personal residence records.
-
Complete the visa and residence process Maintain attendance and progress and check work restrictions before accepting employment.
A student permit is not unrestricted work permission and is excluded from ordinary permanent residence while held.
Eligibility
Applicants need admission to a recognized higher-education institution and the relevant study documents:
- Acceptance and the required student-registration information.
- Evidence of the program language or admission to a preparatory language course.
- Tuition-payment evidence.
- Sufficient funding, housing, health coverage, and the general residence documents.
For the residence application, Decision No. 858 accepts a personal or family Albanian-bank deposit of at least ALL 300,000 per person per calendar year. Qualifying grants, scholarships, valid employment contracts, or job offers can also evidence that amount. The general monthly-income alternative is tied to the current minimum wage. The student visa has its own documentary checklist; confirm the bank and funding evidence required at each stage.
Do not rely on hoped-for student employment to establish funding before that work is permitted.
What This Route Allows
Article 46 normally provides one year, or the shorter program duration, with annual renewal based on continuing study and progress. Qualifying mobility or interinstitutional programs can have a two-year term or the shorter program duration.
After the first year of study, work outside class hours is permitted for up to 15 hours per week, with the required electronic employer notification. During studies the permit cannot simply be replaced by a work permit; after completion, a graduate may apply for a qualifying employment category.
EU students should check the separate registration system under Article 33/1.
What This Route Is Not
This is not unrestricted employment permission. A current student or vocational-training permit is excluded from ordinary permanent residence under Article 88. After moving to an eligible residence basis, prior study or training periods count at half rate under Article 87. Five calendar years as a student do not automatically produce permanent residence.
