Summary
Established temporary residents can seek permanent residence in Argentina after the ordinary qualifying period of two years for MERCOSUR nationals or three years for other nationals. That route also requires valid temporary status, sufficient time in Argentina, and evidence of financial support; direct family and Brazilian-nationality routes have different requirements.
Eligibility
The main options covered here are:
- Previous residence: two years of temporary residence for MERCOSUR nationals or three years for others. Your status must stay valid. You must have spent at least half the period in Argentina, with no absence lasting six consecutive months or more.
- An Argentine parent: a person born abroad to an Argentine citizen can apply through the direct family provision.
- Brazilian citizenship: the bilateral agreement allows an application inside Argentina without the usual residence waiting period. Confirm the procedure and entry documents with immigration.
You still need proof of financial support and the required identity, entry, address, family, and criminal-record documents. Other official categories cover certain former diplomats and recognized refugees.
-
Check which option applies Previous residence, Brazilian citizenship, and an Argentine parent are separate options.
-
Gather the supporting records If applying through residence, check your permits, time in Argentina, and absences.
-
Prepare your application Add proof of support and the required identity, entry, address, and background records.
The usual residence waiting period does not apply to every category.
What This Route Allows
Approval gives you permanent residence and access to a permanent-resident identity card (DNI). You must still follow the rules for keeping your residence; citizenship requires a separate process.
What This Route Is Not
Tourist time and permission issued while an application is pending do not count toward the settled-residence period. Having an Argentine spouse or child does not automatically meet the direct provision for foreign-born children of Argentine citizens.
Next Steps
- Check which permanent-residence option applies to you.
- Gather your residence and travel history, or the nationality and family records needed for a direct application.
- Apply through immigration and confirm the rules for keeping your status.
