Summary
Austria’s family-residence route allows qualifying relatives to join an established resident, with the application determined by that person’s permit. This route generally covers a spouse or registered partner aged at least 21 and unmarried minor children, with additional support, housing, and insurance requirements. Permit limits and access to work depend on the particular residence title.
The process can also require preparation before arrival, including basic German evidence where no exemption applies. A household planning to live together therefore needs to connect the relationship records to the sponsor’s actual status and the requirements for each joining person.
Eligibility
Eligible relatives include a spouse or registered partner aged at least 21 and unmarried minor children, including adopted and stepchildren, of a qualifying non-European resident in Austria.
The sponsor’s Austrian title must allow family reunification. Red-White-Red Card and EU Blue Card holders can sponsor qualifying family; other permits can have quotas or different restrictions.
The family must document the relationship and meet the applicable support, housing, and health-coverage requirements. Marriage and birth records from abroad may need authentication and translation before they can be accepted in Austria.
Some first applications require German at A1 level before arrival. Age, health, the sponsor’s permit, and other legal grounds can create exemptions; the applicant must either provide accepted evidence or qualify for an exemption.
-
Check their Austrian permit It must allow your family category. A limit on available permits may apply.
-
Prove the relationship Check the age, marriage or partnership, and child-under-18 rules.
-
Gather the required documents Check any German requirement before arrival and provide financial support, housing, and insurance records.
Use the checklist for your family member's actual permit. Different permits have different family rules.
What This Route Allows
A family permit allows you to live with the sponsoring relative in Austria. Permission to work depends on the category and any additional employment requirements. The joining relative should have their own status documented; the sponsor’s residence card does not serve as the family member’s permission.
What This Route Is Not
The approved family category determines the rights granted. Living with a relative is not itself citizenship, and a later change in the relationship or the sponsor’s status can affect renewal.
Next Steps
The sponsor’s Austrian residence permit determines the family procedure and any quota or language requirement. The joining relative can then establish whether German evidence is needed before arrival or whether an exemption applies. The family’s birth, marriage, and other family records, support, housing, and insurance evidence should be prepared for that specific title rather than a generic family application.
