Summary

Section 6(1)(a) of the Barbados Immigration Act creates a discretionary immigrant-status route through three defined economic situations: specified full-time public employment, successful establishment in a profession, trade, business, or agricultural enterprise, or a demonstrated likelihood of becoming established in one of those activities with sufficient support.

The applicant must be a permitted entrant and fit one of the statutory situations. Relevant evidence can include education, qualifications, employment history, training, skills, public-employment records, professional or business operations, registration and funding, and the means to support the applicant and dependents while a proposed activity becomes established.

Current official stage: Referred to the Joint Select Committee (Standing) on the Economic and Productive Sectors

The Immigration Bill would replace new immigrant-status applications with permanent-resident categories, including a points route based on factors such as age, Barbadian descent, education, skills, experience and Barbados-based assets. Pending immigrant-status applications would be treated as permanent-resident applications.

Timing: Both bills were introduced on 21 April 2026 and referred to a joint select committee on 29 April 2026. Parliament still lists them at the House stage. If passed, each bill says it would commence on a date set by proclamation; no commencement date has been announced.

What This Route Allows

If the Minister approves the application, the applicant receives immigrant status. An immigrant who later completes at least 5 years of qualifying residence after receiving that status may have a separate permanent-resident route.

What This Route Is Not

It is not an automatic status based on living in Barbados, having ordinary employment, owning property, or proposing an undeveloped business idea. The statutory economic basis must be proven and approval remains discretionary.
