Eligibility

This pathway may fit when the following route-specific requirements are met:

Policy watch 1 development we’re tracking
The statutory work-permit framework may be replaced
Proposal introduced — not currently law

The statutory work-permit framework may be replaced

Current official stage: Referred to the Joint Select Committee (Standing) on the Economic and Productive Sectors

The Immigration Bill would repeal the current Immigration Act and enact a replacement work-permit framework that still depends on an application and ministerial approval. Procedures, fees and employer responsibilities may also depend on regulations, so current work-permit rules remain controlling for now.

Timing: Both bills were introduced on 21 April 2026 and referred to a joint select committee on 29 April 2026. Parliament still lists them at the House stage. If passed, each bill says it would commence on a date set by proclamation; no commencement date has been announced.

Current pathway rules still apply.

What This Route Allows

An approved permit allows the holder to perform the authorized work in Barbados for the approved employer and period. Dependents and renewals are governed separately.

What This Route Is Not

A job search, interview, or informal promise is not a work permit. Approval does not create unrestricted access to every employer or automatic permanent residence.

Next Steps

  1. Confirm that the employer will support the filing.
  2. Obtain the written offer or contract and role description.
  3. Collect the official forms and supporting records.
  4. Apply before starting work and wait for authorization.
