Barbados’s work permit lets a foreign worker take an approved job with a particular employer. The employer supports the application, while the worker supplies identity, qualification, and good-standing records. Authorization must be in place before employment begins.
The approval does not provide unrestricted access to other jobs. A change of employment, renewal, or accompanying relative involves its own requirements, so the application should match the actual role and intended stay.

The Immigration Bill would repeal the current Immigration Act and enact a replacement work-permit framework that still depends on an application and ministerial approval. Procedures, fees and employer responsibilities may also depend on regulations, so current work-permit rules remain controlling for now.
Timing: Both bills were referred to a joint select committee on 29 April 2026. The committee report was tabled on 11 August 2026, and the 29 September 2026 House agenda included a motion to adopt it. The available records do not confirm adoption of that motion or passage of either bill; Parliament still lists both at the House of Assembly stage. Each bill provides for commencement by proclamation if enacted; no commencement date is confirmed.
What This Route Allows
An approved permit allows the holder to perform the authorized work in Barbados for the approved employer and period. Dependents and renewals are governed separately.
What This Route Is Not
A job search, interview, or informal promise is not a work permit. Approval does not create unrestricted access to every employer or automatic permanent residence.
