Summary
Belgium has a nationality declaration route for some residents who have legally lived in Belgium for five years and can show they are unable to work because of disability or invalidity, or that they have reached pensionable age.
This is still a residence-based citizenship route. It is mainly for people already living legally in Belgium.
Eligibility
You may be a fit if:
- You are at least 18.
- You have your main residence in Belgium.
- You have legally resided in Belgium for 5 years.
- You can prove that you are unable to work because of disability or invalidity, or that you have reached pensionable age.
- You can meet the ordinary document and good-character requirements for Belgian nationality.
What This Route Allows
If approved, you become a Belgian citizen. Belgian citizenship is also EU citizenship, and it removes the need for a Belgian immigration permit.
What This Route Is Not
This is not a route for someone living abroad or someone who has only a short Belgian stay. It also does not remove the need to file through the proper Belgian municipal process.
Next Steps
- Confirm your Belgian residence history reaches 5 uninterrupted years.
- Check that your current Belgian residence status supports a nationality declaration.
- Gather proof of disability, invalidity, or pensionable age.
- Prepare civil records, translations, residence-card history, and background documents.
- File the declaration through your Belgian municipality and respond to any prosecutor review.
