Summary
Belgium offers a one-year search period after some higher studies and research stays. It can let a third-country national stay in Belgium for up to 12 months to look for work or set up a company.
This is a bridge, not the final immigration plan. The goal is to turn Belgian study, Belgian mobility study, or Belgian research into a job, Single Permit, EU Blue Card, professional card, or other longer-term status.
Eligibility
You may be a fit if:
- You are not Belgian or using EU/EEA/Swiss free-movement rights.
- You recently completed a qualifying Belgian higher-education degree.
- Or you completed a qualifying EU degree and had a Belgian mobility period.
- Or you completed a qualifying Belgian research stay.
- You are using the year to look for work or set up a company.
- You can show health insurance, adequate means, and the required study or research documents.
- You apply within the correct timing window.
What This Route Allows
If approved, Belgium can issue an A card for the job-search period, valid for up to 12 months. During that year, you can work toward a Belgian employment, self-employment, or business route.
What This Route Is Not
This is not a general job-seeker visa for anyone who wants to move to Belgium. It depends on a recent Belgian study, Belgian mobility, or research connection.
Next Steps
- Confirm whether your degree, mobility period, or research stay fits the Belgian search-year rules.
- Track the filing deadline before your current Belgian status expires or before the consular filing window closes.
- Gather proof of the degree, Belgian mobility period, or research stay.
- Prepare health insurance and adequate-means evidence.
- Use the year to move toward a Belgian employer, professional card, EU Blue Card, or other longer-term route.
