Summary

The Bahamas' current Constitution gives a non-Bahamian woman married to a Bahamian man a route to apply for registration as a citizen. The provision is not written symmetrically: a foreign husband of a Bahamian woman does not use this same marriage-registration route and should review naturalization instead.

Registration requires a continuing marriage, the prescribed filing and oath, and the required supporting records. Constitutional public-policy and national-security safeguards can still affect the decision.

The applicant must fit the current legal class: a woman who is not already a Bahamian citizen and who is married to a man who is a Bahamian citizen. The marriage must remain legally in existence when the claim is made and processed.

The prescribed process requires identity and civil-status documents, the marriage certificate, proof of the husband's Bahamian citizenship, character evidence, photographs, and the applicable declarations and oath. Authorities can investigate the validity and continuity of the marriage and request more information.

A foreign husband, unmarried partner, or former spouse does not fit this specific provision merely because of a close relationship to a Bahamian citizen.

What This Route Allows

Successful registration makes the applicant a citizen of the Bahamas. Citizenship can support a Bahamian passport application and the rights attached to citizenship, subject to the separate passport and civic-document procedures.

The effective date and documentary evidence of citizenship should be taken from the official registration certificate and government records.

What This Route Is Not

It is not automatic citizenship on the wedding date, and it is not a sex-neutral spouse category under the law currently in force. This page describes the current provision; a constitutional or statutory amendment could change it.

It is also not the same as permanent residence. A spouse who does not fit this registration provision may still have a residence route and may later qualify for naturalization under different rules.
