The applicant must have been married to a Bahamian citizen for at least five years, still be married, and live with their spouse. They must prove the marriage and the spouse’s citizenship. The official form asks for documents such as:

During the first five years of marriage, the separate Resident Spouse Permit may allow the spouse to live and work in The Bahamas. Reaching five years makes permanent residence an option to apply for; it does not guarantee approval.

You must apply and receive approval; a Resident Spouse Permit does not automatically become permanent residence. Citizenship through marriage has a separate process.

What This Route Allows

If granted, permanent residence authorizes the person to reside in the Bahamas on a permanent basis subject to the terms endorsed by Immigration. The applicant should confirm whether the particular certificate includes the right to work and whether any separate endorsement is needed.

Permanent residence can create a stable family status, but citizenship is a separate process with different constitutional and statutory rules.

What This Route Is Not

This is not the residence-spouse permit often used during an earlier period of marriage, and it is not an automatic conversion from that temporary permit.

It is not citizenship by marriage. The Bahamas' current citizenship-registration provision is sex-specific, while other spouses may need naturalization. Neither citizenship route should be inferred from a permanent-residence approval.
