Belize Student Permit
At a glance
If you will study in Belize, arrange student permission before the school year or semester starts. You need the school’s confirmation, proof of how your studies and living costs will be paid, and the required personal documents. Permission lasts for a school year at primary or secondary level, or a semester at tertiary level.

- School letter confirming your course and its length
- Support
- Financial support letter and supporting bank or sponsor records
- Personal records
- Passport, birth certificate, and photos; parental permission for minors
Summary
Belize’s student permit lets foreign students live in the country for their studies, with permission required before the school year or semester starts. School confirmation, financial support, and the required immigration records support the application. A student permit does not itself authorize employment. It is not a promise of permanent residence; any later application must meet the requirements of that separate route.
The renewal cycle depends on the level of study: primary and secondary permits follow the school year, while tertiary permits follow a semester. The institution and funding records need to remain current for the next period.
-
Obtain the school’s confirmation Document the intended course, school year, or semester.
-
Prepare financial and immigration evidence Use the current student-permit requirements for the applicant.
-
Obtain permission before studies begin Keep the permit and school records current for the approved study period.
A student permit does not itself authorize employment or guarantee permanent residence.
Eligibility
Confirmation from your school
Obtain a letter from the institution stating the course and how long it lasts. An application to a school without confirmation is not enough.
Funding for your studies and living costs
Provide the financial-support letter and sponsor records required by Immigration. These can include the sponsor’s bank statements and evidence of lawful status in Belize.
Your personal documents
Provide passport, birth certificate, photos, and the applicable school and sponsor records. Minors need the required parental authorization. Tertiary students from outside the region must address the return-ticket requirement.
What This Route Allows
Permission covers the approved study. Primary and secondary permits run for a school year; tertiary permits run for a semester. Renew in time for the next period.
What This Route Is Not
A student permit does not itself authorize employment. It is not a promise of permanent residence; any later application must meet the requirements of that separate route.
Next Steps
- Ask the school for a letter confirming your course and its duration.
- Gather the financial-support letter and sponsor records, along with your identity and any parental-authorization documents.
- Apply before the academic period begins.
- Keep track of renewal for the next school year or semester.
