Summary

Canada's Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) lets eligible Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and registered Indians sponsor parents or grandparents for permanent residence when intake is open and the sponsor is invited.

The program is heavily intake-controlled. IRCC says the 2025 intake is closed and the last day to apply was October 9, 2025.

Eligibility

When intake is available, a sponsor usually needs:

The parent or grandparent must also pass federal admissibility checks.

Duration, Renewal, and Long-Term Path

Approval grants Canadian permanent residence to the sponsored parent or grandparent. Permanent residents can later apply for citizenship if they meet the ordinary requirements.

What This Route Allows

PGP can provide permanent family reunification for parents and grandparents, but only when the intake and invitation process allows the family to apply.

What This Route Is Not

This is not continuously open. If the sponsor was not invited or the intake is closed, the Super Visa may be the more realistic Canada family option.

Next Steps

  1. Check the current PGP intake status.
  2. Confirm whether the sponsor has an invitation to apply.
  3. Confirm the sponsor meets income and status requirements.
  4. Gather tax, identity, family relationship, and admissibility records.
  5. If not invited, review Super Visa eligibility instead.
