Chile Residence for a Resident’s Family
At a glance
Chile lets qualifying partners and children apply as dependents of temporary residents or applicants. Dependents can work, but their permission and later residence options remain linked to the main resident’s category.
- Sponsor
- Temporary resident or qualifying applicant
- Family
- Spouse, partner, or qualifying child or stepchild
- Evidence
- Relationship and support records
Summary
If your spouse, partner, or parent holds—or is applying for—temporary residence in Chile, you may be able to apply to accompany them as a dependent. You must meet the relationship rules and any age, study, or disability conditions.
An approved dependent can do lawful paid work. Your residence still follows your relative’s status, so their category affects renewal and any later application for permanent residence.
Eligibility
The listed relatives are:
- A spouse or documented partner.
- A child or stepchild under 18.
- A child or stepchild with a disability.
- A child or stepchild aged 18–24 who is studying at a state-recognized institution.
The relative supporting your application may already hold temporary residence or be applying for it. Provide the relevant marriage, partnership, or birth records, their support or care declarations, and any required financial, enrollment, or disability evidence. More distant relatives are not included in this list.
Initial applications are normally online from outside Chile, with listed exceptions such as family-reunification or humanitarian cases. Renewal and changes of category have different location rules. Follow the current passport, background-record, authentication, and translation checklist.
-
Check your relative’s residence category Confirm the sponsor's temporary residence or pending application.
-
Prove the family relationship Document spouse, partner, or qualifying child or stepchild status.
-
Add support and other required records Include support and any age, study, disability, or custody records.
The sponsor's category also affects family renewal and permanent-residence options.
What This Route Allows
If approved, you can live in Chile and do lawful paid work, subject to the employment rules for minors. Your permission follows the dates of the temporary residence supporting it.
Working does not make your status independent. Changes in your relative’s category or a child’s eligibility can affect renewal and later residence options.
What This Route Is Not
This is not independent permanent residence. A dependent can seek permanent status only where the principal category permits it and the required conditions are met.
Next Steps
- Check your relative’s temporary-residence category and whether it allows dependents and later permanent residence.
- Gather family records and any required support, study, or disability documents.
- Confirm where you must apply and follow the relevant online checklist.
- Plan ahead if a child is reaching an age limit or finishing studies. Another category may be needed.
- Before pursuing permanent residence, check the exclusions: dependents of seasonal workers and medical-treatment residents are among those excluded.
