Summary
If you have been accepted by a university in mainland China for a course lasting more than 180 days, you can apply for an X1 student visa. After arrival, you must arrange a student residence permit.
Your university provides documents for the application. Admission does not guarantee a visa, and paid work needs separate checks and approval.
Eligibility
Admission and funding
Your course must last more than 180 days. You need the university's admission notice and the relevant study document, called JW201 or JW202. Shorter courses use a different visa category.
Show how you will pay tuition and living costs. This could be through your own funds, an accepted financial supporter, or a scholarship. Ask the university how much you must show and which records it accepts.
Entry and residence
Check the entry rules for your passport, especially if you previously held Chinese nationality. After entering on an X1 visa, arrange student residence within 30 days. You will need the school's documents and any required health records. Entering as a visitor does not replace this process.
-
Accept a university place Get the admission notice and the JW201 or JW202 study document.
-
Apply for the X1 visa Prepare funding, identity, and any required health records.
-
Arrange student residence After X1 entry Complete the residence process within 30 days after entry.
School admission and immigration approval are separate. Off-campus work and internships need additional approval.
What This Route Allows
The residence permit lets you stay for your approved studies. Read it for the length of stay and any conditions, and tell the university if you change courses or stop attending.
Off-campus work or an internship requires school approval and the relevant details added to your residence permit. Do not start either activity before those steps are complete.
What This Route Is Not
This route does not cover short X2 study visits or study in Hong Kong or Macao. A university place is not a promise of immigration approval.
Graduation does not automatically give you permanent residence or unrestricted permission to work. Staying afterward requires a suitable further permission.
Next Steps
- Ask the university to confirm that your course qualifies for an X1 visa and to provide the study documents.
- Get its checklist and prepare your funding, academic, identity, and health records.
- Apply for the visa, then complete local registration and student residence within the required deadlines.
- Check approval requirements before any off-campus work or internship, and plan renewal or your next step before the permit expires.
