Costa Rica Student Permission
At a glance
If you study at a recognized institution in Costa Rica, you can apply for renewable student permission. The school must confirm your enrollment, and you must show how you will pay your living and study costs. This student category does not normally allow paid work or count toward the ordinary three-year route to permanent residence.
- School
- Recognized Costa Rican institution
- Support
- Certified funds or scholarship
Summary
Costa Rica grants renewable student permission when a recognized school confirms your enrollment and you can document your support. This route covers the ordinary student category; institutions arranging short educational visits may use a separate procedure. Ordinary paid work is not authorized without an exceptional approval.
The Migration Law allows permission for up to two years within the course’s duration, while the ordinary regulations describe one-year grants and annual renewal. Confirm the actual dates with your school and DGME, Costa Rica’s migration authority.
-
Confirm the recognized institution Obtain the school’s enrollment certification and application instructions.
-
Show how the stay will be funded Prepare support and personal records without relying on ordinary local employment.
-
Apply and track the approved term Complete documentation after approval and arrange timely renewal with the school.
This special immigration category is not the qualifying temporary residence used for the ordinary three-year permanent-residence route.
Eligibility
A recognized school and actual enrollment
Obtain certification signed by the institution’s legal representative or director confirming that you are its student. Admission to an overseas online program does not establish this connection. Ask the school which immigration procedure it supports before paying nonrefundable costs. This pathway covers the ordinary student category. Registered institutions inviting students for short educational visits may use the distinct, simplified procedure introduced by Law 10645 in 2025; its documents and duration should be checked separately.
Financial support
The regulation calls for certification from an authorized public accountant identifying your financial support and its source. Scholarship recipients provide certification from the awarding institution stating the amount, duration, and expenses covered. The student provisions do not state one universal monthly amount for every applicant.
Identity and application records
Expect to provide a passport, birth record, applicable criminal-record evidence, photographs, and entry records, along with the application and required payments. Foreign documents may need an apostille or legalization and an official Spanish translation. An unaccompanied minor whose application is handled by a third party needs the prescribed parental authorization.
Entry permission and student permission are separate matters. Check your nationality’s entry rules and coordinate the application procedure with the school and the General Directorate of Migration and Immigration, known as DGME. Registered institutions may use specific educational procedures; do not assume every course or school uses the same application process.
What This Route Allows
Approval lets you remain for the authorized studies. Renewal requires an updated institutional certificate confirming that your student relationship has continued, plus the applicable documentation and payments.
The ordinary student category does not authorize paid or profit-making activity. The Migration Law also allows DGME to authorize required social service or professional practice, whether paid or unpaid. Other work requires special approval with stated reasons, so neither possibility is a dependable way to fund ordinary living costs before permission is granted. Obtain the specific permission before starting any such activity.
Qualifying family members may have a separate dependent application. Their right to work needs its own review; accompanying a student does not create unrestricted employment rights.
What This Route Is Not
It is not an automatic route to permanent residence after three years. Costa Rica’s permanent residence after temporary residence requires three consecutive years in the qualifying temporary-resident category. Student permission under this special category does not satisfy that test.
It is also not a general graduate work permit. If you want to stay after study, identify another category that fits your circumstances before student permission ends.
Next Steps
- Ask the school to confirm its recognition, your enrollment certification, and the appropriate immigration application process.
- Establish a support plan that works without ordinary local employment, and obtain the required financial certification.
- Prepare civil, identity, and applicable background records with the necessary authentication and translations.
- Confirm entry requirements, file for the correct student category, and complete documentation after approval.
- Track annual renewal and discuss any change of course, school, or future immigration category before it affects your permission to stay.
