Summary
Germany's Au Pair Residence is a temporary cultural-exchange pathway for young adults who will live with a German-speaking host family. It is not a general work visa, but it can be a useful short-term route for language learning and cultural immersion.
The core fit is:
- You are 18 to 26 when applying
- You have basic German knowledge, roughly A1
- You have a German-speaking host family arrangement
- You have not already completed a full one-year au pair stay in Germany
- The Federal Employment Agency approves the au pair employment
- Health insurance and standard residence documents are in place
Eligibility
- Non-German applicant who needs a German residence title
- Age 18 to 26
- Basic German language ability
- German-speaking host family
- No prior full-year German au pair stay
- Health insurance and no public-order issue that blocks residence
What This Pathway Allows
If approved, the residence permit allows a stay as an au pair in Germany for up to one year. After the au pair stay, a different residence purpose may be possible, such as language study or university study, if the separate requirements are met.
What This Pathway Is Not
This is not a permanent-residence strategy by itself. It is also not a regular childcare job or general employment pathway.
