Summary
Foreign students can obtain the Dominican Republic’s E-1 permit for study at an accepted institution. This is a nonresident permission, so it should not be treated as ordinary temporary residence or a permanent-residence clock. E-1 is a nonresident category. Years holding it are not the ordinary RT-9 renewals required for the standard change to permanent residence, and it does not itself grant unrestricted employment.
-
Confirm the accepted institution and study Obtain the school evidence for the planned course.
-
Prepare the student-permission file Use the current E-1 requirements and personal immigration records.
-
Maintain the approved study permission Check renewal or another status separately before the permission ends.
E-1 study time is not the ordinary RT-9 renewal history used for the standard permanent-residence transition.
Eligibility
Acceptance by a school or university
Provide the institution’s admission or enrollment confirmation for the intended study.
Student visa required for E-1
The residence authority requires the appropriate student visa and entry records. Tourist admission does not replace this step.
Financial support and insurance
Provide evidence covering study and living costs, the required insurance, and any sponsor or parental documents.
Documents for your application
The file includes passport, legalized civil and background records as applicable, photos, and the required medical examination. Confirm the current E-1 checklist before arranging foreign documents.
What This Route Allows
The E-1 permit allows approved study. It is issued for a year and renewed while the course and renewal requirements continue, within the applicable renewal limit.
What This Route Is Not
E-1 is a nonresident category. Years holding it are not the ordinary RT-9 renewals required for the standard change to permanent residence, and it does not itself grant unrestricted employment.
Next Steps
Coordinate the admission letter and visa with the institution and Dominican consulate, then follow DGM’s E-1 application and medical process.
