Summary
If you are a citizen of Bolivia, Colombia, or Peru, you can apply for up to two years of temporary residence in Ecuador through the Andean agreement. You do not need to qualify through a particular employer, pension, or investment.
You still need an application with identity, background, and financial-support records. Living in an Andean country without its citizenship does not qualify you.
Eligibility
The Andean migration agreement applies to citizens of those three countries moving to Ecuador. Living in a member country without holding its nationality is not enough.
The specific checklist follows Article 20 of the Andean agreement. It requires accepted identity evidence, the relevant background certificates, and the required statement about the purpose of residence and financial support.
The application needs a valid passport, applicable background records, and evidence of lawful status if applying in Ecuador. Foreign records must meet the authentication and translation rules. The electronic application and payment must be completed as instructed by the Foreign Ministry.
-
Confirm your citizenship Hold Bolivian, Colombian, or Peruvian citizenship.
-
Gather the agreement’s required documents Document identity, background, residence purpose, and financial support.
-
Apply for temporary residence Follow the Foreign Ministry's Andean checklist.
Check the later permanent process before temporary permission ends.
What This Route Allows
The approval allows the holder to live in Ecuador under Andean temporary residence for up to two years initially, with the rights provided by the agreement.
A later application for Andean permanent residence has its own timing and evidence rules. The initial temporary grant provides a period of residence; it does not automatically complete that later step.
What This Route Is Not
A regional identity document does not by itself grant residence. Andean permanent residence requires a later application and compliance with its timing and evidence rules.
Next Steps
- Confirm that you hold Bolivian, Colombian, or Peruvian citizenship.
- Check the Article 20 document list and prepare your identity and background records, plus the required statement explaining your stay and support.
- If applying inside Ecuador, confirm that your current status allows the application.
- Complete authentication, translations, the electronic application, and payment as instructed by the Foreign Ministry.
- Check the separate timing and evidence requirements if you plan to apply for Andean permanent residence later.
