Summary
Ecuador's digital-nomad category is temporary residence for a person who can perform remote work while living in Ecuador and whose employer, clients, or owned company is domiciled outside Ecuador. The current official procedure says the category is available to nationals of all countries; it is not limited to a published nationality list.
The applicant must prove the foreign work relationship and meet one of the official income measures: at least three unified basic salaries per month during the preceding three months, or 36 unified basic salaries over a year. Ecuador's 2026 unified basic salary is USD $482, so the planning figures are USD $1,446 per month or USD $17,352 per year. Each dependent requires another USD $250 per month.
The route also requires health insurance or equivalent coverage valid in Ecuador for the full visa period. The income and insurance are filing evidence, not rough lifestyle suggestions.
Eligibility
A strong file normally shows:
- remote or telework that can be performed from Ecuador;
- an employment, service, client, or business relationship outside Ecuador;
- documents identifying the foreign employer, clients, or owned foreign company;
- bank statements or other official evidence meeting the exact income test;
- health insurance valid in Ecuador for the same period requested for the visa;
- the additional USD $250 monthly amount for each accompanying dependent;
- a valid passport and the identity, criminal-record, and immigration documents required by the current procedure; and
- lawful, authentic, properly translated and legalized foreign documents where required.
For an employee, the evidence may include the foreign employment relationship and permission or practical ability to work remotely. For an independent contractor, the file should clearly identify foreign clients and the services. For a business owner, ownership and the foreign domicile of the business matter. A local Ecuadorian employer or Ecuadorian client relationship is not the intended core of this category.
The threshold is exact. In 2026, USD $1,445 per month is below three current basic salaries. The amount must be recalculated in the filing year because Ecuador resets the basic salary. Do not count undocumented future income. If relying on the annual alternative, confirm with the processing office exactly what period and bank evidence it expects.
The policy must expressly cover care in Ecuador for the full requested visa period. A credit-card benefit, short travel policy, or policy excluding long stays should not be assumed sufficient.
What This Route Allows
Approval gives temporary residence in Ecuador while the qualifying foreign remote work continues. Current law generally permits temporary residence for up to two years and provides for renewal, subject to the law and the category still being satisfied at the time of renewal.
The resident can make Ecuador their home, obtain the corresponding identity document, rent or buy property, use local services, and continue the documented remote activity. Eligible family members can apply under the applicable dependent rules if their relationship records and the additional income requirement are met.
Temporary residence can be relevant to a later permanent-residence application, but permanent residence is separate and must satisfy the law in force when filed. It is not issued automatically with the digital-nomad visa.
Spending substantial time in Ecuador can also create Ecuadorian tax residence. The SRI rules include day-count, economic-interest, and family-connection tests. A foreign employer and foreign bank account do not by themselves prevent Ecuadorian tax residence.
What This Route Is Not
This is not:
- a tourist extension;
- a residence route for ordinary employment by an Ecuadorian employer;
- a route based only on savings;
- a “close enough” income test;
- permission to ignore Ecuadorian tax or business-registration rules;
- permanent residence or citizenship; or
- a guarantee that every travel-insurance product will be accepted.
The phrase “digital nomad” does not mean the work is exempt from all Ecuadorian law. Someone with Ecuadorian clients, employees, a fixed local business, regulated services, or a substantial commercial presence should obtain tax and business advice and confirm whether another residence category is more accurate.
Next Steps
- Identify the exact foreign work basis: employee, contractor with foreign clients, or owner of a foreign-domiciled company.
- Download the current official digital-nomad procedure and compare its evidence list with the contracts, company records, and letters actually available.
- Calculate income using the current filing-year basic salary. For 2026, retain statements proving either the USD $1,446 monthly test for the required preceding period or the USD $17,352 annual alternative.
- Add USD $250 per month for every dependent and prepare civil records proving each relationship.
- Obtain written insurance confirmation that the applicant and dependents are covered in Ecuador for the full visa period.
- Order criminal and civil documents only after confirming issue-date, apostille/legalization, and translation rules with the responsible office.
- File through the current Cancillería channel and keep the remote work, income, passport, and insurance valid during processing and after approval.
- Before moving, review SRI tax residence and obtain cross-border tax advice.
