Ecuador's Professional Visa is for people with a recognized professional, technical, or higher-education credential who want temporary residence in Ecuador. It generally requires title registration with Ecuador's competent authority, proof of lawful support, and standard identity and background documents; it does not require starting a business.

Summary

The Profesional Visa (Visa de Residencia Temporal Profesional) is an unusually useful corner of Ecuadorian immigration — a residency visa granted on the strength of a recognized professional, technical, technologist, or artisan credential. For university-degree applicants, the key requirement is registering the degree with SENESCYT. It does not require a job offer, employer sponsorship, investment, or starting a business in Ecuador.

You register your foreign degree with Ecuador's SENESCYT (Secretaría de Educación Superior), the agency that recognizes higher-education credentials, present the registration to Cancillería, Ecuador's foreign ministry and consular-services portal, and can receive a two-year VIRTE (temporary residency) that you can use to work, freelance, or simply live in the country. For Americans with a bachelor's degree or higher, it is often one of the most straightforward paths into Ecuadorian residency.

Professional visa time counts toward Ecuadorian naturalization. 21 months VIRTE → VIRPE → three more years as permanent resident → naturalization eligibility. Ecuador allows dual citizenship.

What This Route Allows

This route can allow you to live in Ecuador for qualifying work, usually with a specific employer, role, or approved work activity. Eligible family members may be able to accompany you when this pathway accepts dependants. Confirm the dependant file before relying on it: relationship records, minimum income or housing if required, health insurance or background checks, and whether dependants receive work authorization or residence only.

What This Route Is Not

This is not a general open work permission. Work routes usually depend on a qualifying job, employer, occupation, salary, or transfer arrangement.

Next Steps

  1. Request your diploma and transcript in apostille-ready form. Order sealed originals from your university's registrar, then apostille each through the state that issued the degree (or the US Department of State for federal institutions).
  2. Get a CINE / ISCED certification letter. Ask your university's registrar for a statement mapping your degree to the ISCED level (Level 6 = bachelor's, 7 = master's, 8 = doctorate). Some universities need prompting — this is a 2023 Ecuadorian requirement.
  3. Translate everything into Spanish. Use a certified translator; the SENESCYT system and Cancillería both require Spanish versions.
  4. Register the degree with SENESCYT. File online at siau.senescyt.gob.ec. A professional gestor can help for complex cases. Document handling and professional-help fees vary.
  5. Apply for the visa through Cancillería. Once SENESCYT returns your registration certificate, file the Profesional visa application at serviciosciudadanos.cancilleria.gob.ec. Current official guidance lists a $50 application fee and $270 visa issuance fee.
  6. Register your cédula. Within 30 days of arrival or approval, visit the Dirección General de Registro Civil to obtain your cédula de identidad.

SENESCYT registration is usually the main sequencing step, so start it before you assemble the rest of the visa file.
