Summary

A foreign spouse of a Fiji citizen can apply for exemption status to enter, live, and study in Fiji, using the citizen's request and evidence of a continuing legal marriage. The application also includes the prescribed identity, police and medical records; it is not issued automatically upon marriage.

The initial period is generally up to one year, subject to passport validity. A spouse who plans to work still needs a separate work permit. Marriage to a permanent resident or an unmarried partnership does not satisfy the citizen-spouse basis.

Eligibility

The applicant must be legally married to a Fiji citizen. The application normally includes a request from the citizen spouse, proof of Fiji citizenship and the legal marriage, the applicant's passport and photograph, and the required police and medical records. Fiji Immigration may request additional evidence.

What This Route Allows

Approved exemption status allows entry, residence, and study. Initial approval is generally for one year, or less when the passport has shorter validity, and may be extended if the Director approves the application.

What This Route Is Not

It is not available merely through an unmarried partnership or marriage to a Fiji permanent resident. It does not authorize employment; a spouse who intends to work must obtain the appropriate work permit.
