Summary
Grenada’s section 5A registration process allows certain adults to apply for citizenship through a Grenadian grandparent when neither parent was ever Grenadian. It requires an application and approval, rather than recognizing automatic citizenship by descent. The grandparent’s citizenship and the absence of citizenship in the intervening parent generation must be documented.
A spouse of someone registered under this provision cannot automatically use the ordinary marriage-registration rules through them.
Eligibility
- Be of full age and capacity, born outside Grenada, with parents who were never Grenadian citizens.
- Establish a grandparent’s Grenadian citizenship and your family connection.
- Meet good-character, service-intention, and oath requirements to the Minister’s satisfaction.
-
Grenadian grandparent Establish the grandparent's citizenship with accepted records.
-
Parent Document the link and confirm that the applicant's parents were never Grenadian citizens.
-
Adult applicant born abroad Prove the final parent-child link and meet the registration requirements.
Approval is not automatic. You must meet character requirements, intend to serve the State of Grenada as required by law, and take the oath.
What This Route Allows
Obtain citizenship if the Minister approves registration under section 5A.
What This Route Is Not
Citizenship is not automatic from a grandparent’s birthplace. A spouse cannot rely on the ordinary marriage-registration provisions through a section 5A citizen without an independent qualifying basis.
Next Steps
Ask the responsible ministry for the current section 5A checklist and its interpretation of service to the State, then gather the family and citizenship records.
