Summary

International students can seek residence in Ghana for an accepted course, with the Ghanaian institution participating in the application. In addition to the student's admission letter and fee receipts, the school sends its own supporting application to the Ghana Immigration Service. Arrange that step with the institution rather than treating an offer of admission as residence approval.

Personal records and support evidence vary by case and may include a responsible person's letter or financial guarantee. Confirm those requirements and the entry timetable with the school. Work and post-graduation plans require their own immigration assessment.

Could this pathway work for you?

Eligibility

Prepare your admission letter and fee receipts. The institution sends a supporting application letter to the head of Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), so ask the school how and when it will arrange this.

You may also need a letter from someone accepting responsibility for you, a financial guarantee called a bond, a birth certificate, or a sworn statement. Confirm which of these apply to you. Gather your passport, photos, and non-citizen identification, and check the entry and application timing with the school.

Applying to study and live in Ghana
  1. Confirm admission and the school’s instructions Ask how the institution will support your residence application.
  2. Prepare study, payment, and personal records Check whether a support letter, bond, or other evidence is needed.
  3. Obtain entry and student residence permission Follow the study conditions and renew before expiry.

The school’s admission decision and the residence approval are separate steps.

What This Route Allows

Once approved, you can stay in Ghana for the studies and period covered by the permit. Continue to meet its conditions and ask the school when updated documents will be needed for renewal.

What This Route Is Not

Admission alone does not grant residence. Student residence does not promise unrestricted employment, a work visa after graduation, permanent residence, or citizenship. Check work plans and any later stay separately.

Next Steps

  1. Confirm your accepted place and obtain the school’s immigration instructions.
  2. Arrange the school’s supporting letter and prepare admission, payment, financial-support, and personal records.
  3. Obtain the required entry and residence permissions.
  4. Check the permit’s expiry date and start renewal before it runs out.
