The Gambia Student Residence
At a glance
If you have a place on a qualifying higher-education course in The Gambia, you can apply for student residence through Permit A. You need enough support to study without paid work. This guide covers adults making their own permit application.
- Age
- 18 or older for this adult student application
- Study evidence
- An accepted higher-education place and the school records Immigration requires
- Additional records
- Passport, identity, status, embassy statement, and an alien card for non-ECOWAS applicants
Summary
An adult student can live in The Gambia for accepted study through the nonworking Permit A process. The school must provide the study records Immigration requires, while the applicant documents financial support and the required identity and status evidence. Non-ECOWAS applicants also need the applicable alien card.
Eligibility
You must be 18 or older for this adult process. Ask about separate arrangements for a younger student.
Document your accepted place and enough financial support for the stay without relying on work under Permit A. Ask the institution and Immigration which school records are required.
Prepare your passport, identity and immigration-status records, and an official statement from your embassy. Applicants from outside the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) also need an alien card, an identity document for foreign residents. Keep your entry permission valid throughout the application process.
-
Confirm admission and the student checklist Ask the school and Immigration which records are needed.
-
Document support without paid work Gather financial, embassy, identity, and any additional card records.
-
Complete the entry and residence process Follow Permit A’s nonworking conditions and renew before expiry.
A school place does not grant residence or permission to work.
What This Route Allows
If approved, you can remain in The Gambia for the studies and period covered by the permit, while continuing to meet its conditions. Check when updated documents are needed for renewal.
What This Route Is Not
Permit A does not allow paid work or income-producing business activity while studying. Admission alone does not grant residence. Student status does not promise a work visa after graduation, permanent residence, or citizenship.
Next Steps
- Confirm admission and obtain the institution’s immigration instructions.
- Prepare study, financial-support, embassy, and personal records and arrange any required identity card.
- Obtain the required entry and residence permissions and keep your stay lawful while applying.
- Renew before expiry or arrange the different permission needed for your plans after study.
