Summary
You may be able to join a family member who lives in Hong Kong. The relatives who can apply, and whether they can work, depend on that person’s immigration status.
Your family member is called your sponsor: they support your application and must show that they can house and support you. Each person joining them needs an application.
Eligibility
Who can join whom
An eligible worker, entrepreneur, person admitted through a talent scheme, or full-time local degree student can generally bring a spouse or recognized legal civil partner and unmarried dependent children under 18.
A permanent resident or qualifying resident with unrestricted stay can also bring a parent aged 60 or older. Living together as an informal couple, or being engaged, is not enough.
Support and documents
Your sponsor must have a status that allows family applications, provide suitable housing, and show enough support for living costs well above a bare minimum. You must prove the relationship is genuine. Not every student course allows family sponsorship.
Prepare relationship records, your sponsor’s immigration documents, and evidence of money and housing. Check the rules for both people’s nationality and residence history. Some nationalities are excluded, and separate arrangements apply to mainland Chinese residents and some former mainland residents in Macao.
-
Check your family member’s status It determines which relatives can join and whether they may work.
-
Prove the relationship and support Prepare family records, housing evidence, and financial documents.
-
Read your permit conditions If approved Check the expiry date and whether work needs separate approval.
Each relative needs an application. Students and their family members have different work rules from many other residents.
What This Route Allows
An approved family permit lets you live in Hong Kong for the period stated on it. Family members joining eligible workers, people admitted through talent schemes, and permanent residents generally may work. Family members joining students need the Immigration Department’s permission before working.
Check renewal rules if your sponsor changes status or a child reaches the age limit.
What This Route Is Not
This does not cover every parent, adult child, or unmarried partner. It does not automatically give you permanent residence.
A short visit is different from permission to live with family. One person’s approval does not cover everyone in the household.
Next Steps
- Check your sponsor’s immigration status and whether it covers your relationship.
- Collect relationship records, immigration documents, and proof of financial support and housing.
- Confirm nationality restrictions, translations, certification, and entry requirements before applying.
- Read your own permit for its expiry date and work conditions before accepting a job.
