Summary

A place on an eligible full-time university program in Hong Kong can let you apply for a student visa or entry permit. Your school helps confirm that the course is covered and provides documents for the application.

You must also show how you will pay for your studies and living costs. The rules depend on your nationality, where you live, and the course you will take.

Eligibility

You need confirmed admission to an eligible full-time, accredited higher-education program. Ask the institution to check that it fits the Immigration Department’s student policy and to provide the admission and sponsorship documents.

Show how tuition and living costs will be covered, through your own money, an accepted financial supporter, or a scholarship. Ask the institution how much you must show and which records are accepted.

You must meet the identity, security, housing, and funding requirements. Separate arrangements apply to applicants from mainland China, Macao, and Taiwan. The policy does not cover every nationality or every course.

Preparing to study in Hong Kong
  1. Confirm the course is covered Ask your institution about the student rules for your nationality and course.
  2. Prepare the application Gather admission, financial, and identity documents.
  3. Check your study and work conditions If approved Read the approved stay and any No Objection Letter.

Admission and immigration approval are separate. Work conditions vary by student category and current policy.

What This Route Allows

Approval lets you stay for the course and period stated on your permission. Tell the institution if you change courses or stop attending.

For work, read your No Objection Letter—the document setting out the work permitted in your case—and the current student policy. Some eligible full-time local degree students have broader temporary permission to work.

What This Route Is Not

There is no single weekly work allowance for all students. Exchange students and other course types may have different rules.

Admission does not guarantee immigration approval. Graduation does not automatically give permanent residence or unrestricted work rights; graduate employment needs a separate application.

Next Steps

  1. Ask the institution to confirm your course is eligible and provide its immigration checklist.
  2. Gather admission, funding, academic, identity, and any required health records.
  3. Follow the entry process for your nationality and complete any local registration or stay application on time.
  4. Read your work and renewal conditions before relying on either.
