Summary
Hungary's guest investor residence permit is a residence-by-investment route for third-country nationals whose investment is treated as being in Hungary's national economic interest.
The current official route has two main investment categories:
- at least €250,000 in investment certificates issued by a qualifying real-estate fund registered by the Hungarian National Bank
- at least €1,000,000 as a monetary donation to an eligible higher-education institution maintained by a public-interest trust foundation
The residence permit can be valid for up to 10 years and may be extended for another 10 years for the same purpose. This is not direct citizenship.
Eligibility
- You are a third-country national, not an EEA citizen or qualifying family member under free-movement rules
- You make one of the qualifying guest investor investments
- You can document the investment, including the fund certificate or donation confirmation
- You can show accommodation in Hungary
- You have financial means and healthcare coverage, or can cover healthcare costs
- You are not subject to deportation, an entry/stay ban, or a Schengen Information System alert
- Your stay is not considered a threat to public order, public security, national security, or public health
What This Route Allows
This route can allow long-term residence in Hungary through a qualifying investment. It is especially relevant for applicants who want an EU residence base but are not pursuing a work, family, student, or ancestry route.
What This Route Is Not
This is not a direct citizenship route and not a simple purchase of a passport. Naturalization is a separate process and generally requires years of residence, Hungarian-language ability, and the standard citizenship requirements.
