Hungary Self-Employment Residence
At a glance
Hungary's guest self-employment permit may fit you if you will work for yourself or take a qualifying management role in a business there. You need evidence of the work you will do and how the activity will support itself. Registering a company alone is not enough.

Summary
Hungary's guest self-employment permit lets eligible independent workers and company managers live there to carry out a genuine business activity. Contracts, tax records and credible operating plans support the case; creating a company is not enough. Financial evidence differs by role, and company managers may use a specified staffing test.
The permit normally starts with up to one year and carries ongoing reporting and renewal conditions. It generally cannot sponsor family during that first year, and it does not qualify the holder for a national residence card. Those limits make it different from an unrestricted business or settlement route.
-
Choose independent work or qualifying management Identify the actual services, duties, and sustaining contracts.
-
Prepare the business and residence evidence Document tax, activity, housing, and health-coverage requirements.
-
Apply and track ongoing obligations Maintain operating evidence and the reporting and renewal calendar.
Company registration alone is insufficient. Family reunion and switching categories have specific restrictions.
Eligibility
The application must establish genuine independent activity or a qualifying chief-executive role. Business plans need support from contracts and other credible commercial evidence; incorporation alone does not prove that the activity can support the applicant.
The financial evidence depends on the role. The alternative staffing test for company managers requires at least five Hungarian or free-movement workers employed full time for six continuous months. Accommodation, health coverage and personal subsistence must also be documented.
More about this route
This is a different proposition from the White Card for foreign remote workers. It also comes with limits that matter to a household: family reunification is generally unavailable during the first year, and the permit does not qualify its holder for a national residence card.
What This Route Allows
The initial permit can last up to one year, with extensions within a three-year total. A further issuance may be requested under the published rules as that period ends. Work is confined to the approved activity; family sponsorship and later residence rights must be assessed separately.
What This Route Is Not
This is not a general work permit for any job, a passive company-registration product, or a shortcut to Hungary’s national residence card. Switching to another category from inside Hungary is restricted. The first-year family restriction has a narrow exception for a child born in Hungary.
Next Steps
- Choose the correct independent-work or management basis and gather contracts supporting it.
- Prepare the required tax, business, housing and health-coverage records.
- Apply through the permitted filing channel and arrange the reporting and renewal calendar around the actual activity.
