Summary
Icelandic naturalization is a residence-based citizenship route for people already legally settled in Iceland.
The ordinary residence period is seven years, but Iceland has shorter periods for some groups, including Nordic citizens, spouses or registered cohabiting partners of Icelandic citizens, children of Icelandic citizens, former Icelandic citizens, refugees, humanitarian permit holders, and stateless people. Residence history is only one part of the file. Iceland can also review permanent-residence status, support, language, background, and document requirements.
Eligibility
You may be a fit if:
- You already live legally in Iceland
- You meet the residence period that applies to your situation
- You have or can meet permanent-residence status requirements unless exempt
- You can satisfy support, language, good-character, and documentation rules
- You can document continuous lawful residence and any absences
What This Route Allows
If approved, naturalization gives Icelandic citizenship. Iceland allows dual citizenship, but the other country involved may have its own rules.
What This Route Is Not
This is not a route for someone who has not yet built qualifying residence in Iceland. It is usually the end of a residence path, not the first step.
