Jamaican Citizenship through Residence
At a glance

You ordinarily need residence throughout the year immediately before applying, plus at least four years in total during the preceding seven years. You must document the time that qualifies.
- Support and plans
- Good character, financial support, and an intention to live in Jamaica after approval
- Evidence needed
- Residence, identity, and character records
- Time living there
- Final twelve months plus four years in the preceding seven
Summary
Adults outside the Commonwealth and Irish registration route can seek Jamaican citizenship through qualifying residence. The ordinary test combines the immediately preceding year with at least four years of residence during the seven years before it. This is not a flat five-year continuous-residence test or an automatic grant. Commonwealth and Irish citizens should assess the separate registration route, and British protected-person or waiver cases require individual review.
Eligibility
Residence throughout the final year
Use your residence and travel records. If your residence was interrupted or falls outside the usual periods, ask PICA whether an exception is available; do not assume one will be granted.
Four years during the preceding seven
You need at least four years of residence in total during the seven years before the final 12-month period. Four years spent in Jamaica at some other point in your life do not meet this test.
Plans to stay, financial support, and character
PICA requires the applicable residence, income, tax, and work-permission records. The Act requires good character and an intention to reside in Jamaica after approval.
Documents for your application
Prepare the naturalization form, identity records, four qualifying Jamaican-by-birth references, and the required newspaper notices. Follow PICA’s rules about referees, certification, and the timing of publication.
-
Earlier 7-year window Document the earlier qualifying residence At least four years within the relevant seven-year period.
-

This is not a flat five-year continuous-residence test. Commonwealth and Irish applicants should check the separate registration route.
What This Route Allows
Successful naturalization grants Jamaican citizenship. The ordinary residence pattern amounts to at least five years across the prescribed periods, followed by the decision process.
What This Route Is Not
This is not a flat five-year continuous-residence test or an automatic grant. Commonwealth and Irish citizens should assess the separate registration route, and British protected-person or waiver cases require individual review.
Next Steps
Build a dated residence and travel history before collecting references or paying for notices. Ask PICA to confirm the calculation and current application instructions.
