Summary

A place on an eligible higher-education course in Japan can let you apply for Student status. Your school normally helps prepare the immigration documents before you apply for an entry visa.

You need to show how you will cover tuition and living costs. Admission and immigration approval are separate, and paid work needs additional permission.

Could this pathway work for you?

Eligibility

You need the institution’s acceptance documents, records of your academic background, and evidence of funding for study and living costs. Funding can come from your own money, an accepted financial supporter, or a scholarship. Ask the school how much you must show and which documents it needs.

The school normally helps obtain a Certificate of Eligibility, an immigration document supporting the visa application. It does not guarantee approval. Applying without it requires more evidence and can take longer.

Check the passport, nationality, entry, and local residence-card requirements with the school.

From admission to studying in Japan
  1. Confirm your place and funding Get admission records and show how tuition and living costs will be paid.
  2. Prepare the immigration documents The school normally helps obtain a Certificate of Eligibility for the visa application.
  3. Complete arrival requirements If approved Arrange local registration and check any separate work permission.

A university offer or Certificate of Eligibility does not guarantee a visa. Paid work needs additional permission.

What This Route Allows

Student status lets you stay for your approved studies. The period is individually granted, up to four years and three months. Read your documents for the actual dates and conditions, and tell the institution if you change courses or stop attending.

Paid work needs separate permission for activities outside Student status and must stay within its conditions.

What This Route Is Not

An admission letter does not authorize an ordinary full-time job. Language-school and other study categories need their own checks with the institution.

Neither admission nor graduation guarantees a further immigration status. Permanent residence and permission to work after study have separate requirements.

Next Steps

  1. Confirm with the school that your course qualifies for Student status.
  2. Get its checklist and prepare admission, academic, funding, identity, and any required health records.
  3. Follow the Certificate of Eligibility and visa process, then complete local registration and residence-card steps on time.
  4. Check work-permission and renewal requirements before relying on either.
