Lebanon Citizenship Through a Father
At a glance
If your father was Lebanese when you were born, you may already be a Lebanese citizen. You need proof of his citizenship at that time and your relationship to him, followed by birth registration in Lebanese records.
- Parent
- A Lebanese father under the applicable nationality rule
- Records needed
- Birth and Lebanese family-registration records proving the relationship
- Family history
- Distant ancestry alone does not establish the claim
Summary
If your father was Lebanese when you were born, you may already be a Lebanese citizen. You need records showing his citizenship at that time and your relationship to him. Registering your birth in Lebanon is how you document that citizenship.
Eligibility
You must show that your father was a Lebanese citizen when you were born and that official records establish him as your father. Your father’s present passport alone may not settle his status on your birth date.
The consulate asks for your birth certificate and your father's Lebanese family-registration or identity records. Marriage and earlier family registrations may need attention before your own birth can be recorded. Obtain the records for each relevant generation rather than relying on a family story.
If your father acquired citizenship after your birth, your connection is only through your mother, your parentage is disputed, or adoption is the link, ask the consulate or a qualified Lebanese advisor to identify the applicable rule. Those situations need a separate check before you can rely on this route.
-
Check your father's citizenship Get proof that he was Lebanese when you were born and obtain his family-registration records.
-
Gather the family documents Collect your birth record and any marriage or earlier family-registration records the consulate requests.
-
Address missing or conflicting records Resolve missing registrations, name differences, or questions about the parent-child relationship.
-
Register your birth Use the relevant Lebanese authority, then follow the separate identity-card or passport process.
This process documents citizenship from birth when the requirements are met. Distant ancestry alone is not enough.
What This Route Allows
If you became a citizen at birth, registration records the citizenship you already have. Once the birth record is accepted, you can ask about the separate identity-card or passport application and its document requirements.
What This Route Is Not
This is not a general citizenship offer to everyone with Lebanese ancestry. A Lebanese grandparent alone is not enough for this route. A separate law for recovering nationality had a limited application period; do not assume it remains open. Family history still needs to be supported by the required registration and identity records.
