Liechtenstein Family Residence
At a glance
You may be able to join a family member in Liechtenstein, depending on their citizenship and residence permit. EEA and Swiss citizens generally have broader rights to bring family. Other residents face more limited family categories and application deadlines. A permit to live in Switzerland does not give the same rights.

Summary
A family member joining someone in Liechtenstein is assessed against the sponsor’s citizenship and residence permit. EEA and Swiss residents have broader family-reunification provisions, while other foreign residents face narrower relationship categories and specific application deadlines. A residence permit in neighboring Switzerland does not establish the same position.
Eligibility
EEA means the EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. EFTA means Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland.
The sponsor’s actual Liechtenstein permit is the starting point. EEA and Swiss family applications require proof of the relationship, dependency where relevant, the required resources and comprehensive health insurance.
For other foreign sponsors, the rules include the relevant three-year filing deadline and, in applicable cases, four years of proper uninterrupted residence. Both spouses must be adults, and basic German for the joining spouse is normally required. Exceptions need an individual legal assessment.
More about this route
For a household, these distinctions affect who can come and when. An adult dependent child may fit an EEA sponsor’s category, for example, while the ordinary child category for a non-European sponsor is limited to unmarried children under eighteen.

A Swiss residence permit does not establish the same position as residence in Liechtenstein.
What This Route Allows
An approved family permit allows the relatives to live together in Liechtenstein. Spouses and children under the ordinary rules for family of non-EU/EFTA residents can take employment while the sponsor’s permit remains valid; self-employment requires the separate status specified by the law. EEA-family work rights follow their own provisions.
What This Route Is Not
This is not the permit lottery, and it is not automatic family access through a Swiss or other EEA residence card. A sponsor’s citizenship does not remove the need for an actual right of residence in Liechtenstein. Wider relatives and unusual dependency cases require a separate assessment.
Next Steps
- Check your family member's status’s permit and the applicable EEA/Swiss or third-country family rules.
- Check relationship, deadline, language and household-support conditions.
- Apply for the required assurance or permit before relying on a move, then complete local registration and health-insurance required steps.
