Sri Lanka Spouse Permanent Residence
At a glance
If you have been married to a Sri Lankan citizen for more than five years, you can apply for Sri Lanka’s Permanent Residence Visa. A review committee decides the application; meeting the marriage period does not guarantee approval.
- Marriage
- More than five years in a continuing marriage
- Spouse
- Must currently be a Sri Lankan citizen
Summary
A qualifying foreign spouse of a Sri Lankan citizen can seek permanent residence by documenting the continuing marriage and the citizen spouse’s status for a review committee. Approval is a decision on residence, not citizenship. The residence card still has a renewal cycle and the status remains subject to the legal cancellation rules.
Eligibility
Your marriage must be continuing, your spouse must currently be a Sri Lankan citizen, and the marriage must have lasted longer than five years. Exactly five years is not enough under this category.
Prepare the required marriage, citizenship, consent, identity, and police records. Other spouse categories, including surviving spouses, have their own rules.
-

What This Route Allows
Approved permanent residence lets you remain in Sri Lanka and carry out lawful work or business, subject to other applicable laws. The residence card is renewable and can be valid for up to ten years.
What This Route Is Not
This does not grant Sri Lankan citizenship or a passport. The card still needs renewal, and permanent residence can be canceled on the grounds set out in the rules.
Next Steps
- Confirm that your marriage fits this category and check Immigration’s current evidence requirements.
- Gather the personal, citizenship, consent, and relationship documents.
- Submit the application for committee review. If approved, obtain the residence card and keep it current.
