Summary

North Macedonia’s family-reunification route allows an eligible spouse or child to join a qualifying foreign resident, with proof of the relationship and any required custody or consent. This is the route for joining a foreign resident. Family of a North Macedonian citizen relies on a different legal basis.

Could this pathway work for you?

Eligibility

This pathway covers a spouse and eligible minor children joining a foreign resident who qualifies to sponsor family. The relationship and any custody or consent requirements must be documented.

The sponsor must have permanent residence or temporary residence granted for one year for an eligible purpose: employment, research, traineeship, or North Macedonian origin. Seasonal employment does not carry this sponsorship right.

The family must document the relationship and meet the applicable support, housing, and health-coverage requirements. Marriage and birth records from abroad may need authentication and translation before they can be accepted in North Macedonia.

More about this route

This is a route for joining a foreign resident, not the separate legal basis for relatives of a North Macedonian citizen. The purpose for which the sponsor’s temporary residence was granted also matters: some categories can support reunification, while seasonal work does not. That can determine whether an employment move is workable for the whole household.

Check the foreign resident's permit purpose
  1. Qualifying sponsor status Confirm permanent residence or eligible one-year temporary residence.
  2. Spouse or minor child Document the relationship and required custody or consent.
  3. Family application Prepare the applicable household-support records.

Seasonal work does not give this sponsorship right; citizen-family cases use a separate basis.

What This Route Allows

A family permit allows you to live with the sponsoring relative in North Macedonia. Permission to work depends on the category and any additional employment requirements. The joining relative should have their own status documented; the sponsor’s residence card does not serve as the family member’s permission.

What This Route Is Not

The approved family category determines the rights granted. Living with a relative is not itself citizenship, and a later change in the relationship or the sponsor’s status can affect renewal.

Next Steps

The sponsor’s permit needs to show a residence purpose and duration that allow family reunification. Once that is established, the spouse’s or child’s relationship records and any custody or consent evidence support the joining application. A family joining a North Macedonian citizen should use the separate citizen-family basis.
