Summary
Mexico generally allows many Temporary Residents to switch to Permanent Residence after completing the maximum temporary-residence period. Temporary Residence is designed for stays longer than 180 days and up to 4 years.
This route is handled in Mexico through the National Migration Institute (INM). It is mainly relevant to people who already hold a Mexican Temporary Resident card.
For long-term residents, this is often the cleanest way to stop renewing temporary cards and move onto a more stable status.
Eligibility
You may qualify when all of the following are true:
- You currently hold Mexican Temporary Residence.
- You have reached the maximum temporary-residence period, usually 4 years.
- You have maintained valid status and can document your residence card history.
- You apply through INM from inside Mexico.
Tourist stays do not count. Temporary Resident Student status can have different treatment, so students should confirm whether they first need a change from student residence to ordinary temporary residence.
Why Permanent Residence Matters
Permanent Residence usually means:
- No ordinary adult card renewal cycle like Temporary Residence.
- More stable long-term status.
- Work authorization is generally broader than some temporary categories, though updates and registrations can still matter.
- Time can support a later Mexican naturalization application if the citizenship rules are met.
What This Route Allows
This route can let an existing Temporary Resident become a Mexican Permanent Resident after enough lawful residence.
What This Route Is Not
This is not an entry visa from abroad and not a path based on tourist time. If you are outside Mexico or do not yet hold temporary residence, start with the route that gets you Temporary Residence first.
Next Steps
- Review your Mexican resident card history and confirm the dates.
- Confirm whether your current status is ordinary Temporary Residence or Student Residence.
- Gather your passport, resident card, proof of payment, application form, and any INM documents requested.
- File the change to Permanent Residence with INM in Mexico.
- Keep address, civil-status, nationality, and work-related records current with INM after approval.
