Mexico can issue Temporary Residence for some people invited by a Mexican public or private institution for a non-remunerated activity lasting more than 180 days. It generally requires an institutional invitation, proof of the activity, and either institutional support or personal funds.

Summary

Mexico can issue Temporary Residence for certain institutional invitations and special non-employment activities lasting more than 180 days. This is part of the ordinary Temporary Resident visa, but the proof comes from the inviting institution or project.

The route can cover some researchers, invited specialists, religious workers, volunteers, cultural participants, or people entering under an international mobility instrument. It is narrow and document-heavy.

This is not the same as Mexico's employer-sponsored work route. If a Mexican employer is hiring you for paid work, use the work-permit pathway instead.

Eligibility

You may qualify if one of these situations applies:

The invitation usually needs to explain who you are, what the organization does, what activity you will perform, how long it will last, and who will cover support and return travel.

Financial Support

If the inviting institution covers support, it may need to prove it has enough resources. Public institutions and institutions in Mexico's national education system may be exempt from that financial proof.

If the institution does not cover your maintenance, you may need to show your own funds or income under the temporary-residence rules.

What This Route Allows

This route can allow a stay in Mexico longer than 180 days for a documented institutional activity. It can be useful when the activity is real and long-term, but not ordinary local employment.

What This Route Is Not

This is not a general work permit and not a catch-all for people who want to live in Mexico without meeting financial-solvency rules. The institution and activity are the core of the file.

Next Steps

  1. Confirm that the Mexican organization can issue the required invitation or responsibility letter.
  2. Gather proof of the activity, duration, institutional purpose, and your relevant experience or qualifications.
  3. Confirm who will cover living costs and return travel.
  4. Apply at a Mexican consulate outside Mexico.
  5. Enter Mexico within the visa validity period.
  6. Complete the canje with INM within 30 days of entry.
