Summary
Mexico's Temporary Resident Student visa is for people accepted into a Mexican educational institution for study lasting more than 180 days.
The process starts at a Mexican consulate outside Mexico. After entry, the student must complete the canje with the National Migration Institute (INM) within 30 days to receive the Temporary Resident Student card.
This is a real residence status, but it is study-focused. Work permission is not automatic; student residents who want to work must request separate authorization from INM.
Eligibility
You can apply when all of the following are true:
- You have an acceptance letter from a Mexican educational institution.
- The letter identifies the program, level or area of study, course name, start and end dates, tuition cost, and institution details.
- You can show funds for tuition, housing, and living costs, or a scholarship or accepted sponsor support.
- You apply at a Mexican consulate before entering Mexico.
- You are staying for study, not simply using school as a wrapper around unrelated work.
Financial support
Mexico's 2025 visa guidelines list student solvency using UMA-based amounts:
- Monthly income, pension, or scholarship over 220 UMA days for the last 3 months; or
- Average savings or investments over 2,290 UMA days for the last 3 months.
Using the 2026 UMA value of MXN 117.31, those formulas are about MXN 25,800 per month or MXN 268,600 in savings. Consulates may convert and round the figures differently, so use the checklist from the consulate where you will apply.
Students with Mexican government scholarships do not need to show ordinary financial solvency.
Parents and sponsors
For applicants who are not older than 25, support can sometimes be shown by a parent, guardian, scholarship, or financing document.
What This Route Allows
This route can allow you to live in Mexico while enrolled in a qualifying study program. Family members may be able to use Mexico's family-unity rules, but they need their own file.
What This Route Is Not
This is not a general remote-work or local-work permit. If your main reason for moving is employment, use the work-permit or financial-solvency route instead.
Next Steps
- Get the acceptance letter from the Mexican school or university.
- Confirm the consulate's current financial-support checklist.
- Gather passport, proof of legal stay in the place where you apply if needed, acceptance letter, financial proof, photos if required, and fee payment.
- Attend the consulate appointment. The visa is normally valid for a single entry.
- Enter Mexico within the visa validity period.
- Complete the canje at INM within 30 days of entry to receive the Temporary Resident Student card.
- If you want to work while studying, ask INM about separate work authorization before accepting paid work.
