Nigeria Student Residence

Nigeria Residency
Pathway overview

At a glance

If you have been admitted to an accredited institution in Nigeria, you can apply for student residence through the R7A category. The school must formally support the immigration application. You need evidence of the required tuition payment and enough money or sponsorship for living costs.

Admission
An accepted place at an accredited Nigerian institution
School support
A formal letter accepting immigration responsibility for you
Money to show
Required tuition payment and documented living funds or sponsorship, including family where applicable

Summary

Nigeria's R7A category lets international students seek residence for study at an accredited institution that accepts responsibility for their immigration arrangements. The student or sponsor supplies proof of the required tuition payment and sufficient living funds, with the prescribed passport and personal records.

A pending school application does not establish admission, and an admission letter alone does not grant immigration status. The residence period and entry deadline are separate, while work needs approval and an accompanying spouse uses a separate category. Short study visits can require another route.

Could this pathway work for you?

Eligibility

Obtain admission from an accredited Nigerian institution and its formal letter or application accepting immigration responsibility for you. An application still awaiting admission, or an offer from a school in another country, does not meet this requirement.

Show that you or a sponsor paid the required minimum tuition. Document funds or sponsorship for living costs, including accompanying family where applicable. Prepare a passport valid for at least six months, the required photograph, and the other application documents.

Applying to study and live in Nigeria
  1. Confirm admission and school support Obtain the accredited institution’s immigration-responsibility letter.
  2. Prepare tuition, support, and identity records Document payment and living costs and check passport validity.
  3. Complete entry and student residence steps Track renewal and obtain any approval needed for employment.

Admission, entry permission, and student residence are separate parts of the move.

What This Route Allows

Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) describes a two-year renewable residence permit for study. The time allowed to enter on the initial visa is separate from how long the residence permit lets you stay.

A spouse can apply separately under the R7B category. Employment requires approval; confirm and obtain the permission needed before accepting work.

What This Route Is Not

Admission does not itself grant immigration status. Student residence is not permanent residence, a guarantee of citizenship, or unrestricted work permission. A short study tour may need a different category.

Next Steps

  1. Check the institution’s accreditation and obtain the admission letter.
  2. Ask the school for its immigration-responsibility letter and current R7A instructions.
  3. Gather tuition receipts, financial-support evidence, and identity records.
  4. Apply through the process NIS confirms and complete the required residence steps.
  5. Track renewal requirements and obtain approval before taking employment.
