Summary
Netherlands naturalization is the ordinary route to Dutch citizenship for people who have already built a lawful life in the Netherlands.
For many applicants, the basic pattern is 5 consecutive years of valid Dutch residence, a current non-temporary residence position, civic integration, and a clean public-order record. The Netherlands also often requires applicants to renounce another nationality unless an exception applies.
This is not a first-entry route. It is the citizenship step after Dutch residence is already established.
Eligibility
You may be a fit if:
- You are at least 18.
- You have lived lawfully in the Netherlands for the required period, usually 5 consecutive years.
- You currently have a valid residence status that can support naturalization.
- You passed, or are exempt from, the Dutch civic integration requirement.
- You can document identity and nationality.
- You do not have disqualifying criminal or immigration issues.
- You can renounce another nationality if required, or you fit an exception.
What This Route Allows
Naturalization can lead to Dutch citizenship, a Dutch passport, EU citizenship rights, and the ability to live and work across the EU under Dutch nationality.
What This Route Is Not
This is not a shortcut for someone who has never lived in the Netherlands. It is also not automatically compatible with keeping every existing citizenship. Dual citizenship exceptions matter a lot in Dutch naturalization planning.
Next Steps
- Confirm your continuous Dutch residence history.
- Check whether your current residence purpose is temporary or non-temporary.
- Confirm your civic integration status.
- Review whether a renunciation exception applies.
- Gather identity, nationality, residence, integration, and public-order documents.
- Apply through the municipality when the file is ready.
- If approved, complete the naturalization ceremony and declaration of solidarity.
