Summary
Netherlands permanent residence is a consolidation route for people who already live lawfully in the Netherlands and want a more secure long-term status.
The usual starting point is 5 consecutive years of valid Dutch residence. IND then looks at your residence history, current residence purpose, income, civic integration, registration, and whether the Netherlands has been your main residence.
IND generally checks whether you qualify for EU long-term resident status first. If not, it may assess national permanent residence.
Eligibility
You may be a fit if:
- You have lived in the Netherlands with valid residence for about 5 consecutive years.
- The Netherlands has been your main place of residence.
- You extended earlier permits on time.
- You still meet the conditions of your current Dutch permit.
- Your current purpose of stay is non-temporary.
- You meet the income requirement.
- You are registered in the Personal Records Database.
- You passed, or are exempt from, the Dutch civic integration requirement.
What This Route Allows
Permanent residence can give you a more stable Dutch residence status. It can reduce dependence on a specific employer, study program, family sponsor, or business route, depending on the final status granted.
What This Route Is Not
This is not a first move-to-the-Netherlands visa. It is for people who already have qualifying Dutch residence.
It is also separate from citizenship. You can be a Dutch permanent resident without becoming Dutch.
Next Steps
- Map your Dutch residence permits and any gaps or long absences.
- Confirm whether your current permit purpose is temporary or non-temporary.
- Check income and civic integration readiness.
- Gather residence, registration, passport, income, and integration documents.
- Apply to IND and be ready for IND to assess EU long-term resident status first.
