Eligibility
You may be a fit if:

- The Dutch educational institution is recognised by the IND as a sponsor for study.
- The programme is accredited.
- You will enrol full-time.
- You can meet the income or funds requirement for the stay.
- You can make enough yearly study progress after arrival.
- You can meet the standard identity, document, and immigration requirements.
The clearest cases are university and higher professional education programmes. Secondary and vocational education can have different and narrower rules, so this pathway is focused on higher education.
What This Route Allows
A Dutch student residence permit lets you live in the Netherlands while completing the approved study programme. It can also allow limited employee work if the employer has the required work permit, and it can allow self-employed work if the student still meets the residence-permit conditions and follows Dutch business and tax rules.
After completing the programme, some graduates may be able to switch into the Netherlands orientation year, highly skilled migrant route, start-up route, self-employed route, or another qualifying residence status.
What This Route Is Not
- A route for moving to the Netherlands without school admission.
- A general work permit.
- A guarantee of housing.
- A guarantee of long-term residence after graduation.
- The same as the orientation year, which is a separate post-study route.
Practical Caution
Housing deserves early attention. Even when the residence permit route is legally straightforward, finding affordable student housing in the Netherlands can be the harder practical problem. Users should not treat admission and residence permission as the whole plan.
