Nepal NRN Cardholder Visa
At a glance
If you hold a foreign passport and a valid Non-Resident Nepali (NRN) card, you can apply for the related Nepal visa and extensions. The card and visa are different documents: the card alone does not authorize your stay.
- Who can apply
- Foreign-passport holders with a valid Non-Resident Nepali (NRN) card
- Visa required?
- Yes; the NRN card does not replace it
- Extensions
- Up to one year, within the card’s validity
Summary
A foreign-passport holder with a valid Non-Resident Nepali card can seek a visa to stay in Nepal on that basis. The card supports the visa application but does not replace the visa. The foreign-passport holder applies through Immigration and must keep the card valid for the requested stay. Extensions are limited by both the immigration decision and the card’s remaining validity.
The supporting NRN card and visa serve different purposes. The visa is free while the card remains valid, but Immigration still controls the stay and extensions; an extension cannot run beyond the card’s validity.
Eligibility
This guide is for people who already have a valid NRN card. Prepare the card, foreign passport, latest visa, and online application required by Immigration.
NRN citizenship documents use a separate immigration process. Ask which process applies if you hold those documents instead of the card covered here.
-
Check the issued card and passport This process is for existing valid NRN cardholders.
-
Apply for the correct visa or extension Provide the card, passport, latest visa, and required application.
-
Keep the visa and card valid Follow Immigration’s approved dates and extension rules.
Holding the card does not remove the need for immigration permission.
What This Route Allows
The NRN visa is free while the supporting card remains valid. Immigration sets the actual stay and can grant extensions of up to one year, within the card’s validity.
What This Route Is Not
This guide does not determine whether you qualify for an NRN card or grant Nepali citizenship. The card is not itself a visa or proof of unrestricted work rights.
Next Steps
- Check that your issued NRN card and passport are valid.
- Obtain the correct entry permission and prepare the visa or extension application.
- Apply to Immigration and keep both the card and visa current throughout your stay.
