Summary

New Zealand's Parent Resident Visa is for parents, grandparents, or legal guardians of an adult New Zealand citizen or resident. It can grant residence, but it is quota-based and starts with an Expression of Interest rather than a full application.

This route depends heavily on the sponsoring child's eligibility and income.

Eligibility

You may be a fit if:

INZ issues a limited number of Parent Resident Visas each year. The income thresholds are reviewed and can change, so the sponsor-income page should be checked before relying on a match.

Duration, Renewal, and Long-Term Path

What This Route Allows

If approved, this visa lets you live, work, and study in New Zealand indefinitely. You can include your partner when the relationship is documented and the partner is included in the residence application.

After holding this resident visa for the required period, you may be able to apply for a Permanent Resident Visa.

What This Route Is Not

This is not an automatic right just because your child lives in New Zealand. The sponsor must qualify, the income rules must be met, and your Expression of Interest must be selected.

It is also not a route for parents who still have dependent children.

Next Steps

  1. Confirm your sponsoring child is a New Zealand citizen or resident and lives in New Zealand.
  2. Check whether the sponsor, or joint sponsors, meet the current income threshold.
  3. Confirm you have no dependent children.
  4. Gather proof of your relationship to the sponsoring child.
  5. Submit an Expression of Interest.
  6. If invited, prepare the full residence application with identity, health, character, English, sponsorship, and relationship documents.
