Summary
This is a temporary work visa for a documented religious role with an eligible New Zealand charity. It is tied to the approved duties, sponsor, and location, with separate rules for extensions and later residence.
This is the work visa that can precede the Religious Worker Resident Visa. Residence is a separate decision with additional requirements; receiving the work visa does not guarantee it.
Eligibility
The applicant needs an offer for work such as teaching religious beliefs, leading worship, conducting religious ceremonies, or providing spiritual care. General support duties can accompany the role, but cooking, cleaning, administration, or religious study alone do not establish the required religious work.
At least two years of relevant training or experience are required. Training and experience can be combined. Ordination records, qualifications, community references, and evidence of earlier duties can help document that background.
The sponsor must be registered with New Zealand’s Charities Services, have advancing religion as its main purpose, and demonstrate a genuine need for the role. It must meet the sponsorship rules, including the ability to provide housing, living support, and return travel if needed. The applicant cannot be an officer or nominated person of that sponsoring organization; the charity should check these formal positions before supporting the application. Identity, health, character, and genuine-intentions requirements also apply.
For a further visa, the applicant must hold a current qualifying religious-work visa, be in New Zealand, and document consecutive religious work for the same sponsor. The normal limit is four years in total, including relevant older religious-work categories. INZ’s instructions allow a limited further visa while a lodged Religious Worker Resident Visa application is completed. That exception requires an application and approval; it does not extend an expiring visa automatically.
-
Confirm the role and religious background Check the main duties and at least two years of relevant training or experience.
-
Arrange the charity’s sponsorship Document its eligibility, support commitments, and the work arrangements.
-

Extensions and residence each require a separate application and their own qualifying evidence.
What This Route Allows
The visa permits the specified religious work for the approved sponsor and location. It also allows study for up to three months in any 12-month period and travel within the visa’s conditions. A further work visa can normally bring the total stay to four years.
Partners and dependent children apply for their own visas. They are not included in this work-visa application, and their eligibility and support arrangements must be checked separately.
After at least three qualifying years on this visa, a person may meet the starting requirement for the Religious Worker Resident Visa. That route also requires age 55 or younger, five years of relevant training or experience in total, English, and ongoing work and sponsorship. A Permanent Resident Visa is a later step after the resident visa’s five-year conditions have been met and removed.
What This Route Is Not
This is not an open work visa or permission for any job at a religious organization. An unrelated job, general volunteering, or theological study does not become qualifying religious work just because a charity is involved. A sponsor or location change needs the appropriate immigration approval.
The resident visa’s age limit does not create a matching age limit for the initial work visa. Someone may qualify for temporary religious work without qualifying for the later residence route.
Next Steps
- Ask the organization to describe the primary duties, location, duration, and pay or support arrangements.
- Confirm its charity registration, sponsorship eligibility, and ability to meet its support commitments.
- Gather evidence of the required religious training or experience. The sponsor must complete form INZ 1190 and explain its need for the role and financial capacity.
- Provide an employment agreement for salaried work or a work description for other arrangements, together with the required personal records.
- If seeking a further visa, document the current visa, continuous work, same sponsor, and remaining time or applicable pending-residence exception. Apply before existing permission expires.
