Eligibility

You qualify if all of the following are true:

The $100,000 track — temporary, then permanent

Two years of temporary residency, converting to permanent residency on renewal. The investment must stay in place for at least five years for the residency to hold. After year five you can divest the plantation stake, but most investors hold through the harvest cycle to realize the timber returns.

The $350,000 track — direct permanent residency

The higher tier gives you direct permanent residency from the grant of the visa. Same five-year lock on the investment. This is the preferred track for investors who want final residency status quickly.

How the reforestation investment works

You're buying shares in a certified teak or hardwood plantation — the land itself is owned and managed by the project sponsor. Your capital funds planting, maintenance, and monitoring over the 15–25 year rotation. Income typically arrives:

Teak from Central Panama commands premium prices in the Asian lumber market, and the Ministry of Environment's certification process is built around ensuring the plantations are real and productive. Historical IRRs are in the mid-to-high single digits — it's a slow, steady return, not a growth play.

The residency only works if the project is on MiAmbiente's approved list. Ask the project sponsor for their certification number and verify it directly with the Ministry — the residency application gets rejected if the project isn't current.

Dual citizenship

This is a residency program. You can apply for Panamanian naturalization after five years of permanent residency — which requires renouncing your original citizenship.
